Retro wave for short hair. Hairstyle “Wave” (retro): what it looks like and how to do it

Hairstyles with waves were popular back in the 40s. They were used by Hollywood stars and film stars in their images. Nowadays, “Hollywood waves” have not lost their relevance among celebrities.

They look very gentle and feminine on hair of any length and are appropriate for everyday or evening styling. You can create this retro hairstyle using a curling iron, pins or straightener, and it’s very simple.

Features of retro wave

In the 19th century, barbers themselves innovated their craft. The inventor of “waves” in the 1880s was Marcel Grato. The hairstyle was called “Marseille”, and the styling tongs were called “Marseille”.

After publication in one of the specialized magazines, the curling tool invented by Grato became publicly available. The topsail style has gained popularity in Europe.

At first, hairstyles with waves could be seen on girls with a thin and slightly angular figure and short hair. Later, wave styling became more feminine and began to be used on medium and longer hair. Appeared such a concept as “undulation”.

Translated from French, the word “onde” means “wave”. A wave is understood as a part of the hair near the main parting, surrounded on both sides by special lines - “crowns”. “Crown” is considered the maximum point of the wave; how long the hairstyle will last depends on its height.

Thick, coarse hair does not respond well to undulation. A hairdresser can assess the condition of your hair and recommend the appropriate method of undulation. Ondulation is carried out within forty minutes or one and a half hours.

Ideally, undulation should mimic the exact shape of the wave, alternating between crest and trough. There are two ways to create a retro wave - hot and cold.

Look at the photo what waves look like on short hair:

And this is how waves look on long and medium-length hair:

"Hot" wave

In order to curl your hair into waves using the hot method, hot tongs and a comb were required. Waves were created by moving the tongs from hair roots to ends, and they had to be placed sequentially - first above the strand, and then below it.

Now waves are created even easier - using round tongs. You can even use it, although it will be a little more difficult.

See how you can create a retro hairstyle using a regular hair straightener:

Nowadays there are special flat irons for curling hair in waves.

So, during hot undulation, one strand of hair is taken, combed and fixed at the roots with hot tongs. For a few minutes, tongs with the heating side should be kept under the strand.

The rest of the hair is combed in the direction of the next wave. Exactly the same procedure must be carried out with another strand, holding the tongs already above the strand. Everything is repeated with the remaining hair.

Here's a way to create waves using a curling iron:

There are also special ones, for example Babyliss, which can be used to make waves. For example, with the help of a triple curling iron you can create such a romantic light hairstyle, with which you can attend not only any celebration, but also on the beach:

In fact, you can use almost any hairstyle, the main thing is to curl the strands the same way and then harmoniously arrange them into a single, common wave, with the same bends.

Cold wave

This is the most an easy way to create waves. Cold waves are created using a comb and fingers. Clamps are also used.

Previously, the hairstyle was fixed with a decoction of flax seeds. Nowadays a strong hold gel is used, which is applied after washing the hair.

Waves form on damp hair. Before laying, you can make a light one, especially if they are long. This will make your hair look more voluminous.

Retro hairstyles are very popular today: in addition to waves, they are also popular. They are especially good because they do not require a long time to create.

And now it’s very fashionable to dye ombre hair - it also creates a certain vintage image of sun-bleached hair, about it. By the way, waves with ombre will look very interesting.

The ombre effect on short hair looks no less interesting: . And, of course, curling such hair in waves will look very appropriate at any celebration.

So, let's see how a cold wave is done. The first wave begins at a distance of about one centimeter from the parting:

  • First, it is determined where the wave will bend. This is done with a comb positioned perpendicular to the head.
  • After a centimeter, the hair moves sharply to the side.
  • Then the comb is placed flat, and fingers move her hair away from her.
  • Other hair is laid in a different direction with a distance of two centimeters from the first crown.
  • The hair is moved with a comb in the opposite direction, and a crown of the second wave is obtained.

The hair is dried using a hair net and clips.

You can also make waves on your hair using braids - all strands will turn out the same:

  • Braid 4-6 large braids (depending on hair thickness). There is no need to make thin braids only if your goal is... However. these will no longer be waves, but small, disorderly curls.
  • Leave your braids in overnight. They practically do not interfere with sleep.
  • Gently undo your braids in the morning and with a few strokes comb your hair carefully fingers. You can lightly lubricate your fingers with gel.

Retro waves in celebrity looks

Actress Kate Bosworth is a big fan of retro hairstyles. Her vintage look is emphasized by strict retro waves:

American theater and film actress Claire Danes also often resorts to this style. In the photo she has short hair styled using cold undulation:

Reese Witherspoon looks charming as always with any hairstyle, including waves. In this photo they are not as strictly expressed as in the previous one, however, this is a wave achieved using:

The beautiful Charlize Theron looks very gentle with her hair done in waves. This lady suits absolutely all hairstyles - from short haircuts with, to light curls on long hair.

As you can see, styling with waves is quite simple, and the resulting image will look very feminine and romantic.

They are so diverse that with their help you can perform styling of any complexity. In the first half of the twentieth century, a variety of methods were used to create hairstyles. Every fashionista tried to master the technique of creating a cold wave using improvised devices and natural remedies.

Glossy, dramatic, cool waves have a special charm. The curves flow into each other and can spread across the entire hairline or part of it, complementing the image. Cold waves emphasize, add depth and drama to the look. The glossy shine of the hair when styled enhances the effect and adds some mystery.

Creating a cold wave

Before you start creating a hairstyle, you need to prepare your hair and make it more elastic.

Prepare a decoction of flaxseed in advance. Cook five to six teaspoons of flax seeds in one liter of water over low heat for fifteen to twenty minutes. Before styling, hair is sprayed with flax decoction and combed with a combination comb-comb with rare and frequent teeth. The root zone is held with the left hand, and combed with the right: first with sparse, then with frequent teeth. Curls are formed using a fine-toothed comb.

Regardless of the length of the strands, the classic version of this styling has not been changed; the differences lie only in the completion of the styling, depending on the length of the hair.

Step-by-step installation instructions

  1. Formation of the first wave. A wide strand is processed on both sides at once. Start from the side in which the installation will be laid, otherwise the bends will be crooked.
  2. Extend three to four centimeters from the roots and press the combed strand with the middle finger of your left hand.
  3. A fine-tooth comb is inserted into the hair so that it fits closely to the finger and is parallel to it. The captured strand is moved to the side by one to one and a half centimeters, sliding the comb in the same plane.
  4. The comb is tilted toward you approximately 45 degrees without removing it from the hair. At the same time, the index finger of the left hand presses the hair between the comb and the bend of the wave, the line of which will be between the fingers.
  5. Comb the hair below the index finger of your left hand and start on the left side of the strand. Three to four centimeters retreat from the base of the root zone, just like on the right, and press with the middle finger of the left hand. A comb is inserted into the hair and moved to the right until it meets the already formed crown (the most extreme point of the wave).
  6. The wave is combined by tilting the head of the comb towards you at 45 degrees.
  7. Formation of the second wave line. Starting from the left side of the strand, stepping back three to four centimeters from the first line, pinch the hair with the middle finger of your left hand.
  8. The comb is inserted into the strand close to the finger and moved to the left.
  9. The wave is pinched with the index finger of the left hand, then the manipulations are repeated on the right side of the strand.
  10. The result is a wave limited by the upper and lower crowns. The comb moves in the direction of the wave that is being formed. The number of lines and waves is determined depending on the length of the hair;
  11. Forming the final wave: The final crown is created, and instead of combing down the length of the hair, the strand is directed in the direction where the comb would be directed to form the final wave.

What will you need for installation?

During the era of cool wave hairstyles, the choice of clips, combs and styling products was extremely limited, so Minimum amount of money required for installation:

  • clamps - ducks without teeth;
  • fine-toothed comb;
  • a knitting pen for finishing touches;
  • styling products (varnish,) and moisturizer.

Some styling details

The installation method, which is almost a hundred years old, has acquired several secrets:

  1. When removing the comb, you should slightly lift the hair, forming a high crown.
  2. In the original version, the hairstyle involves a side parting on either side.
  3. The clamps that will secure the crowns on the sides should be parallel to each other. Their optimal length is half a strand wide.
  4. Apply hairspray only after it has completely dried and removed the clips.
  5. The optimal number of waves: five on the side where there is more hair and three on the opposite side.

Styling hair of different lengths

Creating a retro look will not cause any difficulties, since the design is light and completion does not require additional actions.

The hair is considered ideal for cold wave hairstyles.

Classic retro-style masonry is more difficult to complete.

The hairstyle will take on a complete look if the hair is curled along the entire length, or cold waves are combined with straight strands or with ready-made hairstyles.

To secure the styling, there is a large arsenal of styling products.

Choosing styling products to create waves

  1. Mousse is suitable for hair of any length and structure, but those with oily hair will appreciate its drying effect. Apply it to both dry and wet hair. The more product you apply, the stronger the hold will be. However, you should not exceed the volume equal to a tennis ball, otherwise your hair will look dull and dirty.
  2. Foam - serves not only for fixation, but also to add volume. This effect is suitable for those with thin hair. Apply to damp hair, spread evenly with a large-tooth comb and then blow-dry the hair. Foam should be applied less than mousse - about the size of a chicken egg.
  3. Aerosol gels are a modern remedy. Its advantages are the creation of volume, good fixation, and the ability to comb without damaging the hairstyle. It is applied to dry hair and styled with a thick brush.
  4. Varnish - used for final fixation of finished curls. The degree of fixation - light or strong - depends on the amount of varnish used. If you use varnish with a special sprayer, it is easy to create root volume.

The varnish is applied from a sufficiently large distance so that a light mist of the product gets onto the hair, then the varnish will not stick to it and it will remain soft.

How to make waves on your hair using curlers?

Large curlers are suitable for creating waves. Small curlers are more likely to create curls rather than beautiful waves.

  1. Before using curlers, wash your hair and dry it slightly. They should be moist but not wet.
  2. Then a styling product – mousse or foam – is evenly applied.
  3. They start curling from the hair on the top of the head, then take the strands at the back of the head, and then on the sides. Strands of equal thickness are separated and wound onto curlers in the same direction.
  4. At the end, the styling is dried with a hairdryer. Wait until your hair is completely dry.
  5. When the curlers are removed, carefully separate the strands with your fingers and sprinkle with varnish.

For beautiful waves, curlers of different shapes and sizes are suitable, easy to use. Some people like hot rollers, others like curlers or Velcro curlers.

Using a curling iron to create waves

Some girls are afraid to use it for curling, but modern technology has long made it possible to create hairstyles without harm. Use a good quality curling iron, with a ceramic coating and the ability to set a fairly high temperature. Curl your curls briefly, but at high temperature. This causes less damage to hair. Be sure to use thermal protection.

Beautiful curls are obtained by using a large diameter curling iron and using wide strands.

The sequence of actions is as follows:

  1. Hair is washed and dried naturally or with a hairdryer with cold air.
  2. Divide your hair into 2 parts and pin the top one.
  3. Separate a strand, apply a little mousse to it and wrap it around a curling iron. Hold it vertically. Wait a minute and remove. Leave the strand to cool. So sequentially wind all the lower strands.
  4. Release the top part of the hair and curl in the same way.
  5. When all the strands are curled and cooled, you need to lower your head down, fluff your hair with your hands and sprinkle with hairspray for better fixation.

Waves with an iron

It is not known who exactly came up with the idea of styling curls with a hair straightening device, but the method has become widespread. The width of the iron is usually wider than the curling iron, which means the waves will be more voluminous.

  1. Separate a strand of hair as for a curling iron.
  2. Grab the strand in the middle with the curling iron. Wrap its tip around it with your hands. Don't forget to rotate around your axis to wrap the top of the strand around the plates.
  3. Hold the strand until it warms up and carefully remove it from the iron.
  4. Let the strands cool and spray them with hairspray.
  5. Twist all the strands one by one and, after cooling, separate them with your fingers.

The second way to use the iron

The hair is twisted into one or two strands and heated with an iron along the entire length. You need to hold the iron long enough so that the hair inside the bundle has time to heat up. It is better to go through the iron a couple of times so that the hair curls well. The tourniquet should be released only when the hair has cooled down. The waves will lie differently if the tourniquet is twisted at the back of the head or over the forehead.

Third way

A strand of hair is twisted into a ring with your fingers and clamped with the curling iron.

Styling waves with a hair dryer

The hairdryer itself will not create curls; it requires additional accessories - a round brush, a diffuser attachment, or hairpins.

Use a round brush to style medium-length hair. Twist the strand around the brush and dry with a hairdryer. Do this over the entire head.

The diffuser is used not only to add volume to the hair, but also to curl the curls. Twist all your hair into ringlets, secure with elastic bands and dry with a diffuser attachment.

Lay your hair in 2 bundles, twist it into rings and secure with hairpins; after drying your hair with a hairdryer, you will get beautiful soft waves.

Creating waves with improvised means without a curling iron or straightening iron

When you don’t have a hairdryer or curling iron at hand, it’s easy to style your hair into curls using available products. Just keep in mind that it will take more time for the waves to form. Here are some ways.

Wet wipes

  1. Stretch a wet wipe (preferably unscented, best for children) into a rope.
  2. Wrap wet hair in large rings around the center of the napkin and tie the napkin in a knot, securing the hair.
  3. Curl all your hair like this. Unwind the dried strands and comb them with your fingers, sprinkle with hairspray.

Video instructions for creating waves at home using napkins

Little secret: if there are no napkins, then the hair rings will be held in place by invisible ones. Instead of napkins, even socks will do; use them according to the same principle.

Braids

The quantity and quality of the waves will depend on both the number of braids and the weaving option. If there are 2 braids, then in the middle, where the parting was, you will get straight hair, and there will be waves at the ends.

If you braid one braid from the top of your hair and the second from the bottom, the waves will start from the very top.

The option of weaving a spikelet over the entire head will make the beginning of the waves closer to the head, and hence more volume.

For maximum volume, braid 5 or more braids all over your head, moving close to the scalp and lifting on both sides. This option will ensure an even number of waves and distribution throughout the head without even spans.

Consists of 2 steps: braid damp hair and leave overnight.

Use an aerosol gel before braiding to comb your hair in the morning and avoid ruining your style.
Options for braiding for experiments, you can see.

Harnesses

Twist the waves into a bundle, wrap around the base, forming a bun, and secure with hairpins or rubber bands.

It is worth remembering that due to the large thickness of the bun, the hair inside takes a long time to dry. So do not curl wet or very damp hair.

Leave your comment

Once originated in the 1930s, retro curls are still at the top of their popularity. The era of Chanel, Marilyn Monroe and Marlene Dietrich seems to be the height of elegance and sophistication. And since the possibilities of modern fashion allow you to appear in any image you like, often the choice falls on this particular hairstyle. The sophistication and chic that soft, voluminous curls give is not something you can find on every corner these days. Such an image of self-expression, in comparison with “buns” on the head and disheveled curls, will undoubtedly be an advantage. It’s no wonder that many stars choose it on the red carpet and other events. We will learn how to make retro curls later in the article.

What's happened

Due to the fact that this hairstyle was greatly loved by the movie stars of those years, the name was assigned to it - Hollywood wave. Retro-style curls are characterized by volume, smoothness and shiny hair.

The shiny surface of the hair speaks of its health and beauty. There are no too sharp lines or strong creases here, all strands look sophisticated and elegant.

Attention! All curls must be the same shape.

Hairstyle features

  1. This curl is quite universal. The only limitation is a very short haircut. Retro styling looks most impressive on medium lengths, since even the ends are involved in creating the look. Ideal when the hair is the same length. If the owner has a “ragged” haircut with asymmetrical edges, then performing such a hairstyle will be quite problematic.
  2. There are also no strict limits on color type. Retro curls on blonde are considered a classic option, but this is largely a tribute to the fashion of those years. With uneven hair color, with individual strands highlighted, such a hairstyle will only emphasize the beauty of the coloring.
  3. The curls themselves can be of different sizes. You need to choose one of them depending on the shape and oval of your face. Correctly selected styling can correct shortcomings and highlight advantages. Medium curls are suitable for almost everyone. For a wide face and large features, you should choose them, but it is better to refuse small curls - they will create some kind of disharmony. On an oval-shaped face, any curls will look advantageous.
  4. A classic hairstyle also requires a certain style of clothing. Ideally, it is suitable for attending any events where a floor-length or midi-length dress with a classic twist would look natural.

Retro curls at home

In order to create such a hairstyle, it is not necessary to visit a salon. It can be done at home too. The technique is approximately the same for any length. The most important difference is the choice of tool for creating curls.

Also There are some general rules to keep in mind:

  1. Curling with hot tools can only be done on completely dry hair.
  2. It is better to dry them using brushing - a large round brush, to give additional volume.
  3. When using styling devices more than 2 times a week, be sure to use thermal protection products.
  4. Hair must be clean, without any residue from hairspray or gels.
  5. The parting is usually done straight or on the side.
  6. All strands separated for fixation should be approximately the same size.

To create a hairstyle you will need: brushing brush, regular wide-toothed comb, hair dryer, hairpins or clips, curling iron/curlers/iron, strong hold varnish.

Using a curling iron

The fastest and most convenient way is to use a curling iron.

  1. It is better to choose curling irons and flat irons with ceramic coating.
  2. The size of the styling tool should be selected depending on the required curl size.
  3. There are cone-shaped curling irons without a clamp. On the one hand, it is easier to curl strands on them, and there are no clips left. On the other hand, doing this on your own is not always convenient and requires some skill.
  4. There is a curling iron with three heating elements that can be used for this styling option.
  5. The average temperature for curling is 120–160 degrees. First we make the necessary parting.
  6. We select a strand and twist it into a bundle, not tightly, but simply for convenience. Do not separate too thick curls, as it is difficult to completely warm them up.
  7. We twist it onto the curling iron in the direction away from the face, without closing the pressing part, and hold the tip of the hair with our fingers. This is done in order to avoid creases.
  8. Warm up for 20 seconds and carefully, without unraveling the bundle, release the tongs. We fix the bundle with clamps so that it does not fall apart and there are no creases left.
  9. The tongs must be kept parallel to the parting during all actions.
  10. We do the same with all hair.
  11. After waiting for the curls to cool, carefully unravel them, starting from the lower layers.
  12. Comb the curl carefully along the entire length with a large-toothed comb.
  13. To add structure to the resulting waves, we fix the clips in the places where the hair bends and spray with hairspray.
  14. After 5 minutes, remove the hairpins - the hairstyle is ready.

Note, This method is most suitable for medium-length hair.

Using curlers

For such masonry you will need special thermal curlers.

  1. Before curling, apply mousse or styling foam and dry the hair roots, giving them volume.
  2. We divide all the hair into small strands, about 2 cm. You should not take thicker ones, since this method of curling is gentle and simply will not warm up the curl completely.
  3. The cooling time for these curlers is about 10 minutes.
  4. We remove the curlers and run a thin comb through the curl.
  5. Then we distribute the hair in the required direction and fix the result with varnish.

Styling with curlers is most suitable for medium and long hair.

Using an iron

A hair straightener is a modern tool that has not been used before. That's why the curls obtained with its help will be slightly different from the classic ones. However, using it, you can achieve excellent results with a touch of the 21st century.

  1. We divide all the hair into separate equal zones - temporal, crown, upper lower occipital. Each of them should have 2 mirror images - on the left side of the head and on the right.
  2. We secure them so that they do not interfere.
  3. We unravel one of the zones and curl it as follows - curl the temporal, lower occipital and crown towards the face, and the remaining one in the opposite direction.
  4. The result does not need to be combed, just corrected with your fingers. Spray with varnish. If necessary, some curls near the face can be fixed for a few minutes with clips.

With the help of invisible

For convenience, use special hairdressing pins or clips. This method is most convenient to use on short hair.

Styling devices are not used in this method, therefore Styling foam is applied to the hair.

  1. We divide the hair into a side parting, from the wide side of which we select a small strand of hair near the face and arrange it in the shape of the letter S.
  2. We pin the shaped strand with clamps so that the shape is preserved. We continue the wave all the way to the back of the head, every 2–3 cm, securing it with a hairpin.
  3. 2–4 cm below we create the same wave, but the top of which faces in the opposite direction.
  4. All hairpins should be parallel to the parting and to each other.
  5. We perform similar actions up to ear level. All hairpins form arcs that are located from one ear to the other.
  6. We curl the lower hair into rings and fix it.
  7. The hairstyle is dried, then we remove the hairpins and go through the hair with a wide-toothed comb.
  8. Carefully spray the installation with varnish.

Using a tourniquet

Another, but already “cold” way to achieve retro-style curls.

  1. Apply styling foam to clean, damp hair.
  2. We distribute the hair into fairly thin strands, which we twist around its axis into flagella.
  3. We collect individual strands on the head in the shape of a snail and fix them with clips, after which we thoroughly dry the hair with a hairdryer. The hair dryer should be set to cool air, otherwise the hair will become very dry.
  4. After drying your hair, unravel it and straighten it with your fingers. We fix the result with varnish.

Modern fashion brings its new and fresh ideas to classic hairstyles. Interpreting retro styling using modern tools no longer requires careful and lengthy preparation. You can add a touch of elegance and glamor from the 1930s to your look even at home.

Science to the rescue

Fundamental changes in fashion occurred at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to technological progress and scientific discoveries. The famous French fashion designer Paul Poiret abolished corsets, which at that time was unheard of courage. Women's dresses have become much more comfortable also because Poiret dared to shorten them. Of course, from our point of view today, they remained long, just showing the ankles. But then it was perceived as unprecedented insolence, as an attack on morality and ethics. However, the clothes became shorter, and this was immediately reflected in the length of the hair. The widespread short haircut has been modified over the course of a century. In 1922, Victor Margueritte’s story Le garcon (“The Boy”) was published in France, which today is called a cult story.

The style of a woman-boy with an angular girlish figure immediately comes into fashion. Such a woman no longer needs curls and curls - she can easily part with her usual ladies' hairstyle. Such a woman-boy finds use in all professions, diligently plays sports and passionately dances the foxtrot. By the end of the 20s. The “garçon” hairstyle becomes more feminine; the hair is not just cut short, but carefully curled and styled in delightful waves. This is how undulation was born.

And, of course, cinema

The cinematograph, invented at the end of the 19th century by the Lumière brothers, had a strong influence on the development of fashion. The heroes of films became trendsetters in hairstyles, cosmetics, clothes, and hats. Stylists and hairdressers are constantly coming up with new forms of hairstyles, and at the same time it is appropriate to remember the proverb: “The new is the well-forgotten old.” Therefore, after a certain time, hairstyle silhouettes are repeated again, but in an updated form. So, in our time, along with modern styles, glamor and unisex, “retro” is again popular.

Retro- these are thin girls with dark shadows around the eyes, small lips, in nets, chiffon, silk dresses with a very deep neckline, and a lot of jewelry.

Retro hairstyles- this is perfectly styled hair, hair gel, a wavy strand on one side, which is called andulation (from the French onde - wave). It comes in two types: hot and cold. Both species have their own history.

History of undulation

The hairdressers themselves became inventors, and one of the main masters of hairdressing in the 1880s was Marcel Grato, who invented ondulation, a new type of wave curling, which was later named after his name: “Marseille”, and the curling iron was “Marseille”. Hot ondulation is an incredibly complex process even today, because the hairstyle is performed on dry hair only with a comb and tongs so that the master does not touch the hair at all. And for Marcel it was even more difficult: several tongs were heated on special stoves - the master worked with some, others were preparing, others, on the contrary, were cooling down, etc. The legendary hairdresser performed hot undulation, combining it with curls curled on curlers not only for women and girls, but even little girls and their porcelain dolls with real hair! It is clear that such hairstyles were available only to very wealthy ladies. In those years, undulation exactly repeated the shape of the wave: crest - trough, crest - trough. These ideal waves were held without any fixation and were extremely smooth, identical, made according to the most stringent rules.

It is interesting to consider in detail the history of his professional growth - after all, this is probably one of the first examples of a brilliant hairdressing career, of which there were many in the twentieth century. In a small hairdressing salon on Dunkirk Street in Montmartre, Grato served men and poor clients who were not at all eager to take advantage of the new product until they were offered to try it for free. And only after a while the new type of perm became popular. Grato's first client from high society, Madame Gaston Meuniere, invited him to her yacht for a lot of money.

Having become a fashion master, in 1882 Grato sold his hairdressing salon in Montmartre and bought a new salon on Rue de Lechelle, not far from the French Theater, but had rather modest success with a small circle of regular clients, until 24-year-old actress Jane Hading resorted to his services , who was at the peak of her fame. Having combed her hair “in the style of her own mother,” Grato opened a new era in hairdressing. By the end of 1884, his clients included Cleo de Merode, the beautiful Otero, Diane de Pougy, Réjean and other stars of the French stage, so the formerly modest native of Chauvigny was forced to hire numerous assistants. His wife managed to establish an order in which special tariffs were introduced for urgency and additional services, so that the Grato family soon became so rich that in 1897, at the age of forty-five, Grato could already retire from business and live the rest of his days completely comfortably.

To get acquainted with the new method of curling, professionals from other countries traveled to Paris, and the Marseille curl gradually conquered Europe: in 1881 it appeared in Brussels, in 1885 in London, in 1886 in St. Petersburg, and in 1894 - in Vienna. In 1897, a description of the Grato method was published in the specialized magazine La Coiffure Francaise Illustree, the Marseille curling device appeared, and thus ondulation became available to all professionals. The method itself has been actively used for almost fifty years.

Along with the democratic haircut, cold undulation was born:“Marseille” tongs were not available to everyone, so they started styling with their fingers using a strong fixative, which, after much experimentation and searching, became... a decoction of flaxseed. By the way, it gave the hair not only the desired shape, but also a wonderful shine. In the early 20s, it was believed that the more waves protrude onto the forehead and temples, the more fashionable the hairstyle. All variations were carefully and in detail covered by Vogue magazine and the popular tabloid newspaper Du Bon Ton.

What can you do now?

Nowadays, both hot and cold undulation have undergone great changes. If previously waves could only be round in shape, today they can be any kind, even square! And of course, the varieties of techniques for performing this installation are unlimited. Ondulation can be done with electric tongs, fingers, or “combing” the hair curled in curlers in the form of waves. It goes without saying that flaxseed also disappeared into oblivion; it was replaced by various fixatives. The technique of performing undulation in hairdressing schools is still taught in the classical form - the same as it was decades ago, and certainly using flaxseed. Only the learning process is given less and less importance, so that today there are really very few masters left in the city capable of performing real classical undulation.

You have decided to have undulation. The hairstyle will turn out well if you have a short haircut or a bob haircut; soft manageable hair. The hairstyle may not work out if you have a “gradual” haircut (the ends will stick out from the waves); thick heavy hair. But the best thing, of course, is to consult a specialist. He will evaluate your hair and tell you which type of undulation is right for you, how long it will take to complete (from 40 minutes to an hour and a half) and how much it will cost.

Cold Wave

Cold styling is done using your fingers and a comb. The main elements of a hairstyle: parting, waves, crowns, curls.

Partings can be straight, oblique, or half-parting. In a hairstyle with a straight parting, the waves are made the same, but usually cold styling is done on a side parting. Waves are a certain part of the hair that has a smooth bend and is limited on both sides by lines. These lines are called "crowns". There are straight waves, oblique and transverse waves.

Straight waves- these are waves that are located parallel to the parting. Oblique waves are waves that are located at an angle of 45 degrees to the straight parting. Transverse waves are placed perpendicular to the side parting. Waves can be narrow, wide, large, deep, flat. They differ depending on the location of the waves: a protruding wave - on the face and a reverse wave - from the face. Each protruding wave has a reverse one. The waves must be correctly positioned on the head, so there is a frontal, temporal and facial wave. Thickness and height affect the durability of the hairstyle; the higher the tip of the crown, the more durable the styling. The crown is the highest line of the wave, which has a sharp bend in the wave and separates one wave from another. Curls are a strand of hair curled into a tube. Curls can be straight, horizontal, oblique, descending and vertical.

Cold styling technology

Apply the gel to clean, damp hair, start cold styling, using a fine-tooth comb, determine the direction of the waves. Straight waves: Having retreated 1-1.5 cm from the parting, they begin to suggest a wave.

You can calculate the width of the wave in this way: on the larger side of the parting, 5 or more waves, on the smaller side, at least 3. Place the middle finger of your left hand at the place where the wave is supposed to bend. Take the comb in your right hand, insert it into the hair perpendicular to the head and, stepping back 1 cm from the middle finger, make a sharp shift to the side. Lay the comb flat and use your index finger to push the hair away from the comb, pressing it firmly against your middle finger.

As a result, a crown forms between the index and middle fingers. Without removing the comb from your hair, comb your hair in the opposite direction, while smoothing it with the back of your hair. Having stepped back 1.5-2 cm from the first crown, again apply the middle finger of your left hand, move the comb in the opposite direction, forming the 2nd crown or the beginning of a new wave. The waves on the larger and smaller sides of the parting are connected at the back of the head. Most often these are the 2nd and 3rd crowns on the larger side. When styling in some places, so that the hair does not move, it is fixed with clips. When using clips, you must ensure that they do not leave any creases in your hair. When drying cold styling, it is secured with clamps and a mesh is used.

Cold styling mistakes

1. Wrong direction chosen.
2. Hair is poorly wetted.
3. The comb was moved along the top layer of hair; the junction points were not combed.
4. The back of the comb was not used.
